Welcome to my pretend homestead!

Hello, and welcome to my pretend homestead! On a micro level, this blog aims to document my adventure toward a more self-sustaining lifestyle.

On a macro level, let me be honest... I killed my facebook account 8 months ago and sometimes I just need somewhere to write down the stuff I'm doing.

All of this is to say, I have many hobbies and interests beyond homesteading, and don't want to limit myself to only discussing one topic. I will probably talk about my pitiful attempts at renovating my home; or my slightly less pitiful, but often frustrating DIY decorating projects. I may talk about macerating animal skulls. Don't know what that means? Read on! I will probably talk about my pets A LOT. I promise I won't talk about current events or politics. That's why I got rid of facebook in the first place!

So let me tell you a little bit about me so you know exactly what you're getting into. First and foremost, my name is Jenny. I am 33 years old and live in a small colonial farmhouse in Southington, CT. I work in fundraising for a non-profit theatre in New Haven, CT. I'm married (just under a year) to a pretty great guy who knows that when I get an idea I will see it through, so he just supports me in most of them for both of our sanity. His name is Marcel. I am going to refer to him as Marcel from now on. I also have a rescue hound-mix named Henry Junebug Roselee Walker. She is everything to me. She will probably get her own post someday, but you will definitely hear about her because she is my best thing ever. Last year October I rescued a tiny orange kitten who has grown into a holy terror named Leroy, a.k.a. Bad Bad Flearoy Brown (Flearoy), a.k.a. Lee Ray Biddle (Biddle). He's a pretty funny dude so I'm sure you'll learn more about him as well.

I blame my lifelong obsession with homesteading on my mother. Well, really I blame it on the completely intoxicating stories of Laura Ingalls Wilder, but I wouldn't have known anything about the Ingalls family, or living in a hollowed out hillside (CAN WE PLEASE?!) if it weren't for my ma. Now I'm all grown up with a house in the suburbs with a white picket fence, a husband, "furbabies" (I hate that term), and a job in non-profit fundraising to pay for it all and IT IS UTTERLY, SOUL-SUCKINGLY BORING.

I dream of making it on our own on our little plot of land. I've even got Marcel in on the idea (more or less). The only catch? My homesteading experience is absolutely imagined. So, this spring I decided to take some baby steps into sustainability. So far we have a garden. I will document that in my next post. I've also got some big plans for later on this summer.

So there we are. If you have any questions or want to know anything in particular, you can contact me through the ABOUT page. Otherwise, let's see where this thing takes us!
